What is Moqueca?
MOQUECA is a seafood ragout or stew, a harmonious blend of fish and shellfish, prepared in a rich broth seasoned with tomatoes, onions, cilantro, and sweet peppers. This dish’s roots trace back to Brazil’s native Indians, who originally wrapped dishes in banana leaves and cooked them over charcoal. African influences introduced during the colonial period refined the recipe into the flavorful dish we enjoy today.
Traditionally, MOQUECAS are cooked in clay pots on the stovetop. Variations include coconut milk, dende oil (palm oil), or even a touch of hot sauce for adventurous palates.

Meet Fafá Langa – The Visionary Behind Muqueca Restaurant
Maria de Fatima Langa, affectionately known as Fafá, is the heart and soul of Muqueca Restaurant. Born in Espírito Santo on Brazil’s southeast coast, Fafá’s love for cooking began in childhood, spending countless hours in the kitchen helping her mother.
After moving to the United States, Fafá worked as a tour guide in New York and Canada before pursuing her culinary dreams. Together with her ex-husband, she opened the original Muqueca in Inman Square, starting small but quickly gaining a loyal following.
As Muqueca’s popularity grew, so did the need for a larger space. The restaurant relocated just a block away, creating an inviting environment where Fafá could continue sharing her passion for authentic Brazilian cuisine.
Fafá believes owning a restaurant is demanding yet rewarding, and she wouldn’t trade her journey for anything else.
